Tanqua Kuru returns in 2026 with its intimate format, blending endurance racing with desert spectacle.
Tankwa Karoo, South Africa (04 March 2026)- Riding bicycles in the desert might sound like madness, but in the stillness of the Tankwa Karoo, spectacle and suffering share the same stage.
A small group of gravel riders will gather in this unforgiving landscape for the Tanqua Kuru Bicycle Race. It’s an endurance event that has carved out a distinctive place on South Africa’s cycling calendar. Now in its sixth year, the race returns in 2026 with the same restrained format. A two day challenge on a compact field.
While many endurance events grow by expanding numbers, Tanqua Kuru has evolved by refining atmosphere. The scale allows organisers to build detail into the weekend, layering performance with immersive elements that feel closer to production than participation.

Here, endurance is framed theatrically. The desert becomes the backdrop, the riders the cast. It’s because of its relentless conditions that organisers the named it “Cycling Circus of the Karoo”.
In 2026, the production expands again. Organisers have confirmed the largest Bicycle Burn yet, alongside new route activations.
“We’ve never tried to scale Tanqua Kuru by adding more participants,” says race organiser Jeremy Crowder. “We scale it by deepening the experience. Keeping the field intimate allows us to focus on atmosphere and detail.”
Participants often describe the event as a balance between brutality and beauty. A weekend where the physical toll is offset by a sense of shared narrative.
“You don’t just race the Tankwa,” one returning rider reflects. “You become part of it.”
Tanqua Kuru forms part of a broader shift in endurance tourism. Riders increasingly seek destination events that combine physical challenge with travel, environment and community.
For two days each year, the Tankwa becomes both test and a stage to put on a performance.
