Cape Town libraries brought beloved stories, the joy of learning, and the simple wonder of a good book directly to the Gordon’s Bay shore this week.
Gordon’s Bay, South Africa (12 March 2026) – Libraries are not just buildings filled with books; they are guardians of memory, champions of access, and beacons of lifelong learning. This Tuesday, 11 libraries in and around Cape Town showed that libraries go beyond walls, bringing books, stories and learning directly into the community for the Library Week Beach Activation.
Held at Gordon’s Bay, the day unfolded into a beautiful celebration of reading, community, and connection.
Among the participating libraries were Gordon’s Bay, Hector Pieterson Memorial, Macassor, Sir Lowry’s Pass, Somerset West, Strand, Melton Rose and Eerste River, whose members led fun and educational programmes as well as engaging storytelling for the children in attendance from local schools and neighbourhoods.
There were also special readings by ward councillors and a fun sandcastle-building competition for the littlies.
At the heart of the wholesome event was nurturing a love for the magic found between the covers of a book and an appreciation for the libraries that hold them.
“It was wonderful to see families, children, and beachgoers enjoying storytelling, sandcastle building, and discovering that libraries can truly happen anywhere – even on the beach,” shared Libraries Area East 6 City of Cape Town.

As the sun set on a day filled with shared stories and the books returned to their shelves, what remains are the connections made on the sand and hopefully a renewed appreciation for all that libraries have to offer.
