The Hout Bay Cape Fur Seals are famous for popping up in the harbour, seeing what goes on under the water surface is fascinating and surprisingly tranquil!
Hout Bay is famous for it’s seal activity because of its proximity to ‘Seal Island’. Seal Island is a giant rock, about 5 acres in size, that plays home to more than 64000 Cape Fur Seals.
The Hout Bay harbour is often a place to spot the seals. The seals swim into the harbour and captivate tourists with their shiny bodies, water acrobatics and tail splashes. However we only ever get to see what goes on close to the water surface.

ReWild filmed their underwater experience with the wild Cape Fur Seals. The seals are very inquisitive and friendly animals. They are often compared to dogs because of their sweet nature when in the water. Often they swim around divers out of sheer curiosity. On land they are much more fearful and cautious of human interaction.
