When rising canal waters turned a makeshift shelter into a life-threatening trap, Cape Town’s Fire and Metro Rescue teams proved once again that their heroics extend far beyond fighting flames.

Cape Town, South Africa (21 April 2026) – On Sunday, 19 April, two individuals seeking shelter in a small void within a Pinelands canal found their temporary home turned into a life-threatening trap. As water levels began to rise rapidly, the pair became stranded within the confined space.

The City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service responded immediately to reports of the trapped pair. Upon arrival, firefighters established rope systems and prepared ladders for an emergency extraction. They worked in coordination with Metro Rescue teams, who donned wetsuits and harnesses to reach the individuals and bring them to safety.

The adult male and female were treated for hypothermia and transported to the hospital for further care.

Rope Rescue Technicians are specialised firefighters trained in high-angle, low-angle, and confined space environments, utilising ropes, harnesses, and rigging systems for patient access and rescue. Sunday’s rescue was the third major technical incident in just a matter of weeks that required this expertise of the Fire and Rescue Service.

“The others were the rescue of a woman who fell into a drain in Bonteheuwel and Sable the canine in Durbanville. Once again, they were available to assist and ensure a positive outcome,” said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.

“Rope rescue is a specialised skill within the Fire and Rescue Service. These incidents highlight the critical need for such services, and it makes us proud to be able to call on such a resource in times of trouble. Earlier this year, we were also able to showcase our hazmat capabilities during a chemical reaction incident in Montague Gardens – all indicators of the resource and technical investment in our Fire Service and overall public safety efforts.”

The Pinelands rescue serves as a powerful showcase of the dedication of our firefighters, who consistently go above and beyond their namesake duty of ‘fighting fires’ to provide life-saving support exactly where it is most crucially needed. Their swift and selfless actions this past Sunday undoubtedly saved two lives, and we salute their heroic efforts.
