The injured serval has made strong progress at Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital following surgery and ongoing specialist care, and is now continuing rehabilitation after his pins were removed.
Johannesburg, South Africa (28 June 2026) – A young serval rescued after being found injured near Volksrust is continuing his recovery at the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital, where specialist care has helped him make strong progress following a serious set of injuries.
The patient was brought in a few weeks ago after being discovered on the roadside in a critical condition. X-rays confirmed multiple fractures, including a severe break that required surgical intervention.
After a period of stabilisation, surgery, and ongoing treatment, veterinarians confirmed that his recovery has progressed well. His pins have since been removed, and he is now doing exceptionally well as he continues with rehabilitation.
He has also grown noticeably during his time under care and will soon transition into a larger enclosure as he continues preparing for eventual release back into a suitable natural environment.
Staff say he still eagerly signals bottle time every morning and is quick to let everyone know if it is delayed.

The veterinary team say these milestones are especially meaningful, as they reflect the outcome of consistent, hands-on care for injured wildlife.
“Watching wild patients recover and regain their strength is one of the greatest privileges of our work. Moments like these remind us why every late night, every difficult surgery, and every challenge is worth it.”
