A team of more than five SPCA inspectors save an adventurous donkey from a sticky situation of ding dong…ditch.

Gauteng, South Africa (29 June 2026) – Donkeys sometimes land themselves in sticky situations that call upon the heroes!

The Kempton Park SPCA was called out after a curious donkey became trapped in a deep hole and was unable to climb out on her own. When the senior inspector arrived, it became obvious that the rescue would need planning and plenty of helping hands.

The donkey’s owner said they hadn’t realised she had wandered away. Fortunately, they were working from home and heard the commotion, allowing them to quickly find her and call the SPCA. They stayed with the frightened animal until help arrived.

“The owner also explained that the hole is normally covered and had no idea that someone had removed the covers.” the SPCA shares. “Accidents happen, and sometimes our four-legged friends find themselves in the most unexpected situations.”

More members of the Kempton Park SPCA team arrived soon after and together they worked out the safest way to lift the donkey to freedom.

“With determination, teamwork, and a lot of encouragement, we successfully lifted her safely out of the hole.” the SPCA shared, “There were smiles, relief, and even a few tears of joy as she stretched her legs, stood up, and happily walked back to her stable… undoubtedly wondering where her well-deserved carrots were!”

Accidents like this one happen all the time, and often in an instant, but even the trickiest situations can have happy endings when the right people are called to step in. If you ever spot an animal trapped, distressed or displaced, make sure to call on the local SPCA.

“A huge thank you to everyone who assisted with this rescue. Moments like these remind us what can be achieved when people come together for the welfare of animals.” it shared. “Every rescue matters. Every life matters.”
