The FIM Motocross World Championship heads to Johannesburg this weekend, bringing the sport’s biggest names back to South Africa for the first time in 18 years.
Johannesburg, South Africa (01 July 2026) – MXGP is back, and South Africa is ready to welcome the world’s best motocross riders once again.
For the first time in 18 years, the FIM Motocross World Championship will roar back onto South African soil when Johannesburg hosts a round of the prestigious global series on 4 and 5 July at Terra Topia.
The return marks a significant moment for local motorsport, bringing some of the world’s top motocross riders together with South African talent for a weekend of high-speed racing, fierce competition and family-friendly entertainment.
The South African leg forms part of the international MXGP calendar. Organisers hope the event will re-establish South Africa as a regular stop on the world championship circuit.
The organisers believe this is much more than racing.
“This is bigger than one race weekend. MXGP returning after 18 years is a statement that South Africa can once again host international motorsport at this level. The goal is to deliver a strong first edition and build a sustainable platform for 2027 and 2028.”
The action begins on Saturday with practice sessions, time practice and qualifying races, giving fans an early taste of the championship battle before Sunday’s main event.
Sunday will see riders compete in both the MX2 and MXGP classes, with Race 1 and Race 2 expected to deliver plenty of edge-of-your-seat moments as the championship contenders chase valuable points.
If one wants a break from the racing, spectators can look forward to a festival atmosphere featuring fan zones, sponsor activations, food and beverage stalls, media experiences and activities designed for the whole family.
The event is also expected to provide a welcome boost for Johannesburg’s hospitality, tourism and events sectors, while showcasing South Africa’s ability to host world-class international sporting events.
The countdown is officially on for the long-awaited return of MXGP to South Africa.
