The newly launched iThemba Kuluntu Women’s Centre is expanding the hub’s already vibrant community impact by equipping more than 20 young women in Cwebeni with the confidence and tools to build a safer, brighter future.

Cwebeni, South Africa (09 July 2026) – The iThemba Kuluntu Women’s Centre recently opened its doors in Cwebeni, Eastern Cape, with a mission to empower the next generation through skills and education.

For its inaugural session, more than 20 young women gathered to begin an eight-week Gender-Based Violence (GBV) programme – marking the start of a journey focused on building learning, confidence, and self-empowerment.

During the first session, they explored what GBV is, the different forms it can take, how to recognise it, and practical ways to respond to and protect themselves in potentially harmful situations.

This programme goes beyond raising awareness. It equips young women with the knowledge and confidence to make informed decisions, speak up for themselves, and support others in their communities.

As a vital community hub, iThemba Kuluntu already serves as an Early Childhood Development (ECD) facility, providing children with a safe space to learn, explore, and build critical skills for a brighter future. The hub also champions sustainable agriculture and youth empowerment through its Community Training Garden, which acts as both a sustainable food source and a hands-on educational tool for the entire neighbourhood.

Building on this foundation, the new women’s centre is expanding the hub’s impact by focusing on programmes designed specifically to empower local women.

Sponsors and supporters: SA Harvest also had the privilege of attending the centre’s official opening, and CEO Chef Pinky joined in on the activities alongside the participants.

“It was a powerful reminder that learning is most impactful when everyone takes part. We look forward to following the journey of these remarkable young women over the coming weeks and seeing the lasting impact this programme will have in Cwebeni,” SA Harvest said.

By empowering young women to claim their power, build confidence, and protect themselves, this initiative plays a vital role in creating safer, stronger communities where women and girls can thrive.
