The Litterboom Project’s latest clean-up prevented 1,680kg of waste from continuing downstream towards the ocean.

South Africa (29 July 2026) – In just two hours, a small team of dedicated River Wardens proved just how much can be achieved when people come together for a cleaner environment.

Despite grey skies over Cape Town, there was no shortage of determination along the Soet River, where eight River Wardens rolled up their sleeves for a rapid clean-up operation that delivered remarkable results.

By the time the two-hour effort came to an end, the team had removed an astonishing 1,680kg of litter, filling 560 bags with waste that would have continued downstream and into the ocean.

The clean-up forms part of the work of The Litterboom Project, South Africa’s first large-scale river interception initiative. Their latest clean-up serves as another reminder that every bag collected is one less bag polluting rivers, harming wildlife or washing up along South Africa’s coastline.
