Afrika Tikkun’s Beauty in Ability pageant set the stage for 20 young people to showcase their unique talents and personalities while challenging perceptions and reminding us all why disability inclusion matters.
Johannesburg, South Africa (06 August 2026) – Following its inaugural celebration of beauty that challenged perceptions of disability last year, Afrika Tikkun hosted its second annual Beauty in Ability pageant – and the contestants delivered quite a show.
Held on 31 July to mark the close of Disability Pride Month, the event provided a platform to celebrate self-expression, build confidence, and challenge societal perceptions of disability. It created a meaningful opportunity for young people living with disabilities to be recognised for their unique strengths, talents, and potential.
This year’s contestants came from the Foundation’s four Johannesburg Centres of Excellence in Diepsloot, Alexandra, Braampark, and Orange Farm, following pre-selection events at each centre, where managers and facilitators nominated young people who had shown growth and readiness.
Each of the 20 finalists brought their own confidence, talents, personality and aspirations to the stage while challenging one of the biggest misconceptions about intellectual disability: that it defines what a person is capable of achieving.
By the end of the day, Yanga Gongwana won the title of Mr Ability while Nonhlanhla Nxasana was crowned Miss Ability. Njabulo Vincent Mthembu and Ayanda Mncube were sashed as prince and princess, respectively.
Far more than just about the pageantry glam and bright lights, the initiative created an opportunity where inclusion, representation and empowerment beautifully came together.
“We are proud to champion a platform that celebrates resilience, leadership and the unique abilities of every finalist,” said Afrika Tikkun, whose disability work sits inside its cradle-to-career model that considers the needs of each young person across different stages of their lives.
“To every contestant, thank you for inspiring us with your courage and confidence. Your stories continue to challenge perceptions and remind us why disability inclusion matters.”
A huge well done and congratulations to every contestant, stakeholder, organiser, family and supporter who was part of an initiative that continues to help create opportunities for young people to grow in confidence, embrace their potential and celebrate them for who they are.
