Since mid-June, Mdzananda Animal Clinic and Shelter’s mass sterilisation campaign has transformed the lives of 497 dogs in just six weeks!
Khayelitsha, South Africa (06 August 2026) – In just six weeks since kicking off its mass sterilisation campaign in mid-June, the Mdzananda Animal Clinic and Shelter has successfully sterilised 497 dogs!
This incredible milestone puts them halfway to their ambitious goal of 1,000 sterilisations. These sterilisations are being performed in addition to the clinic’s daily sterilisation programme at its on-site operating theatre – highlighting the organisation’s commitment to tackling the growing pet overpopulation crisis in Khayelitsha and surrounding communities.
Since launching its mass sterilisation campaign in mid-June, the Mdzananda Animal Clinic and Shelter has sterilised 497 dogs in just six weeks!
This marks significant progress towards its ambitious goal of 1,000 sterilisations. These sterilisations are being performed in addition to the clinic’s daily sterilisation programme at its on-site operating theatre, highlighting the organisation’s commitment to tackling the growing pet overpopulation crisis in Khayelitsha and surrounding communities.
There are about 300,000 dogs and cats living in Khayelitsha, with this number continuing to grow as the human population expands. Without widespread sterilisation, the number of unwanted animals increases rapidly, placing immense pressure on families, communities, animal welfare organisations and already limited resources.
“Sterilisation is one of the most effective and humane ways to reduce animal suffering. It prevents unwanted litters, decreases the number of animals that face abandonment, neglect and abuse, and contributes to healthier pets and safer communities,” says Marcelle du Plessis, Fundraising and Communications Executive.
“Sterilised animals are also less likely to roam, fight, or contract certain diseases, improving their overall welfare and reducing the burden on owners.”
Mdzananda is the only non-profit veterinary clinic serving Khayelitsha and surrounding communities. The clinic provides affordable veterinary care to thousands of pets every year, offering a vital lifeline to pet owners who would otherwise have little or no access to veterinary services.
“Poverty in our community means that private veterinary care is simply out of reach for many families,” says du Plessis.

For just R200, donors can sponsor one sterilisation, helping to prevent countless future litters and breaking the cycle of animal suffering before it begins.
