The young athlete has been selected to represent South Africa in Bangkok, but needs community support to make her international debut a reality.

Cape Town, South Africa (13 August 2026) – What started on the dodgeball courts of Valhalla Park has turned into an opportunity to represent South Africa on the world stage.

Chantè Opperman plays for the Valhalla Vikings, a community-based dodgeball team where the sport offers much more than competition. For many young players, it provides structure, friendship, purpose and something positive to work towards.

She embraced it all. She trained hard, kept showing up, and quickly developed into a player who caught the attention of those around her.

Her big break came at the recent South African Dodgeball Nationals, where the Green Mambas head coach spotted her talent. Soon afterwards, Chantè received the news she had been hoping for: she was selected to represent South Africa at the 2026 World Dodgeball Championship in Bangkok, Thailand.

A major part of that journey has been her coach, Camerone, who has worked tirelessly to grow dodgeball in Valhalla Park. From building the programme and creating opportunities for young players to showing up week after week, his influence extends far beyond the court.

For children in the community, the programme provides a positive outlet, keeps them focused and gives them something to aim for. Chantè’s selection is a powerful example of what that commitment can help young athletes achieve.

Dodgeball continues to grow in South Africa, but athletes still have to cover many of the costs involved in competing internationally. Chantè and her teammates therefore need support with travel and competition expenses.

The campaign is helping cover her passport costs, flights, accommodation, meals and daily expenses in Bangkok, as well as transport to training sessions.
