Over the weekend, hundreds of KnitWits came together to celebrate International Granny Square Day.
South Africa (17 August 2026) – As with any knitting and crochet project, 67 Blankets for Mandela Day always knocks it out of the park. Over the weekend, events were held throughout South Africa, with KnitWits coming together to celebrate the Granny Square.
International Granny Square Day is celebrated on the third Saturday of August, so this year, it was hosted on the 15th of August 2026.
It was created as a way for crocheters around the world to celebrate the humble granny square and share their creations. The day has grown into a wonderfully global celebration of colour, creativity, community and, importantly, the fact that something small can become something extraordinary when lots of people contribute.
The humble granny square might look like a simple piece of crochet, but stitch enough of them together and you can make blankets, bags, clothing, cushions and even entire works of art. International Granny Square Day celebrates exactly that idea: one little square might not seem like much, but together, they can create something beautiful.
For 67 Blankets, world records have been set and broken with the use of the Granny Square and all in the name of charity.
The granny squares made over the weekend will go a long way towards the next big charitable project the KnitWits of 67 Blankets work on.
