A young boy’s unexpected nap at his favourite place led to a frightening evening, but thanks to the quick response of local safety officers, the story ended with a relieved dad and a safe child.

Cape Town, South Africa (24 August 2026) – When a nine-year-old boy unexpectedly fell asleep at the Central Library in Cape Town while waiting for his dad’s work shift to end, he woke to find the lights off and no one around.

He had been waiting at the library while his father finished a shift at a nearby barbershop in the East City. Library staff closed up at 4 pm and went home, unknowingly locking the little boy inside, the Cape Town Central City Improvement District (CCID) shares.

Jurie Bruwer, head of CCID Safety & Security, says that when the youngster eventually woke up around 6.45 pm, the library in Parade St was dark and deserted. Panicked, he started screaming for help and knocking on a window to alert passers-by.

“One of our Public Safety Officers on duty near the library heard the commotion and notified the CCID’s 24-hour control room. Night manager Bennie Jacobs went to the library with two other CCID Safety & Security team members. One of them managed to contact a library staff member, who responded and came to open up,” Bruwer says.

The team then accompanied the boy to the closed barbershop, where his worried father was waiting outside for him.

“Happily, the youngster was reunited with his dad soon thereafter.”

After speaking with the boy’s father, the CCID established that he had advised his son not to go to the library after school, as it closed at 4 pm. Instead, the boy was meant to go straight to his dad’s workplace and wait there until his shift ended.

But the lure of the library, its plethora of interesting books and the quiet, secure space, was far too enticing.

Oh, poor thing. Though an unplanned nap at his favourite place brought quite a scare, we’re so glad the local heroes of the CCID were there at just the right time to help and to ensure he was reunited with his dad and safely tucked up in his own bed by the end of a rather rocky night.
