For 90 years, Cotlands has touched young lives and shown that play-based early learning can help children find their confidence, build vital skills and take their next big steps with joy.
Johannesburg, South Africa (24 August 2026) – The first five years of a child’s life are critical for brain development. Children who experience high-quality, play-based early learning opportunities during this time have the advantage of building the skills they need to succeed in school, employment and life. Cotlands has made it its mission to make this possible for children, especially those who might otherwise miss out on this life-shaping support.
This August, that mission turns 90! For nine decades, Cotlands has been part of the stories of children, families, partners, donors, volunteers and communities across South Africa.
Take the story of young Thabo. When he first joined Cotlands’ ECD programme, he was shy and struggled to communicate clearly. He often preferred to stay on his own and found it difficult to join in activities. Through singing, storytelling, ring time, conversations and play, Thabo has begun to engage in activities with other children and is starting to express himself. He is still a quiet little boy but is learning to participate and shine.
Similarly, five-year-old Thando’s journey with Cotlands shows the incredible power of play-based early learning.
“When Thando joined our ECD programme at just three years old, she was very quiet and found it difficult to respond or communicate with others. But with the support of her teacher, interaction with her peers and the power of play, Thando slowly came out of her shell,” the charity said.
Today, she is a confident, curious little girl who is thriving in class! She knows her colours and shapes, can create patterns, sort objects, copy her name and proudly creates neat artwork. Most importantly, she has developed the social and emotional skills she needs to take her next big step: starting school!
These are just two of countless stories shaped over the course of an incredible 90 years!

“From toys accessed through the charity’s toy libraries to first words, first friendships and first steps in learning through play, every memory has helped shape our journey,” Cotlands shared.
As Cotlands celebrates 90 years of kindness, you can help create more moments of possibility for children like Thando and Thabo by donating here.
