As they celebrate their 50th birthday, the Eversdal Primary School family is embarking on a truly unique initiative to support not one, or two or even 10 – but 50 charitable organisations that make a difference in the lives of children!
Cape Town, South Africa (27 August 2026) – As Eversdal Primary School in Cape Town celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, the school has chosen not only to look back on five decades of memories, achievements and growth, but also to give back.
For the past 50 years, Eversdal has been guided by its school motto: “Ons gee” (We give). This year, that spirit of giving is taking on special meaning.
As part of the school’s annual Damus fundraising tradition, Eversdal is embarking on what it believes to be a truly unique initiative for a South African school: supporting 50 charitable organisations that make a difference in the lives of children.
To the best of the school’s knowledge, no other school has celebrated a milestone by supporting 50 different charitable organisations in this way. And of course, we’re more than happy to share all about it!
The initiative is simple but meaningful. During the 25 days leading up to the school’s annual Damus community evening on Thursday, 27 August 2026, two organisations are selected each day to receive a donation of R5,000 each.
By the time Damus takes place, the school will have donated a total of R250,000 to 50 organisations – one organisation for every year of Eversdal’s existence.
Damus: A Tradition of Giving Since 1976
Damus is far more than just a fundraiser. The much-loved Eversdal tradition has been part of the school’s identity for decades, bringing learners, parents, staff and the wider community together for an evening of games, food, fun and giving.
What makes it particularly special is that the money raised is not used for the school itself. The proceeds are donated to charitable causes.
This year, in honour of Eversdal’s 50th anniversary, the school wanted to take that tradition one step further by turning the celebration outwards – towards the people and organisations making a difference every day. The 50 selected organisations all support children in one way or another, whether through care, development, education, protection or other vital services.
50 Organisations. R250,000. One Community.
The campaign is about more than the money. By supporting 50 organisations rather than focusing on just one or two causes, Eversdal hopes to shine a light on the incredible work being done by so many organisations tirelessly and often quietly to care for and support children.
The school is sharing the stories of the organisations receiving donations on its social media platforms throughout the campaign, allowing its community to discover more about the people behind these important causes.
Teaching Children That Giving Matters
While the financial contribution will help the organisations continue their important work, the initiative also has another purpose: teaching Eversdal’s more than 1,300 learners that giving can be part of everyday life.
For the school, the greatest lesson lies not only in raising money, but in helping children understand the impact that generosity can have. Eversdal hopes its learners will see that even a small contribution can become something significant when an entire community comes together.
“In our 50th year, we are reminded that a school’s greatest legacy is not only found in what it achieves, but also in the difference it makes in the lives of others.”
You’re Invited to Be a Part of it All
Damus takes place on Thursday, 27 August 2026, from 17:00. Everyone is welcome to join the Eversdal community for an evening of family fun, games, food and giving – with every contribution helping to make a difference.
Because after 50 years, Eversdal’s message remains as simple as ever: “We give”.
