What began as a chance encounter 14 years ago has blossomed into a lifelong legacy of compassion by a women’s sewing group that has dedicated itself to sewing colourful theatre gowns for Operation Smile SA’s bravest little warriors.

Ladysmith, South Africa (31 August 2026) – Operation Smile South Africa relies heavily on local volunteer groups across South Africa to craft Smile Bags, Smile Splints (arm restraints that help protect stitches after surgery) and brightly patterned theatre gowns for children undergoing free cleft lip and palate repair surgeries.

These handmade items help turn intimidating medical procedures into warmer, more comforting experiences for young patients. One of the groups that continues to sew theatre gowns for the organisation is the Helping Hands Sewing ladies from Ladysmith.

Fourteen years ago, a chance introduction connected the Helping Hands group with Operation Smile. One visit to speak to the ladies was all it took for them to agree to start sewing theatre gowns for the patients, and they have not stopped since!

Over the past decade and a half, their steady hands, dedicated hearts and colourful fabrics have brought comfort and dignity to countless children preparing for surgery.

“This incredible group of ladies from Ladysmith continues to sew our theatre gowns, theatre caps and patient care bags, every stitch made with love and purpose.”

Each carefully crafted gown is made from bright fabric, often featuring bold and African-inspired prints. As the Operation Smile team marvelled:

“And can we just say, our patients and medical volunteers are looking absolutely great in these caps and gowns!”

The non-profit volunteer medical organisation thanked Helping Hands for 14 years of fellowship, generosity and for giving so much of themselves to its patients.

“We are endlessly grateful for your support.”
