Found all alone in the rain at a scrapyard in Cato Ridge, these five resilient kittens were embraced with open arms by the Animal Anti-Cruelty League, turning their cold, vulnerable start into a bright and loving second chance.
Hammarsdale, South Africa (28 September 2026) – The Friday afternoon of 18 September ended on an unexpected note at the Animal Anti-Cruelty League (AACL) Durban and Pietermaritzburg branch when not one, not two, but five tiny lives arrived at their doorstep.
According to the animal welfare charity, the five tabby kittens were found all alone in the rain at a scrap yard in Cato Ridge. A quick examination revealed they were only about four weeks old – far too young to have survived the cold, unsafe environment under car scraps and old tyres that they had attempted to make their home.
The AACL team immediately welcomed them with open arms, making sure each kitten was well-fed, warm, and cared for. In fact, it was obsession at first sight! And with that, their story of abandonment turned into a heartwarming second chance.
“These little ones are growing beautifully and are just the sweetest, happiest babies. It is incredible to see the difference a little safety, warmth, good food, and lots of love can make,” AACL said in an update.
Beyond emergency rescues like this one, the Animal Anti-Cruelty League provides essential welfare services across South Africa, including low-cost veterinary care, shelter, sterilisation programmes, and adoption placement for abandoned and vulnerable animals. It is where countless animals find help when there is nowhere else to go. Without their intervention, these five kittens would have likely succumbed to the harshness of the elements in the scrap yard.
For now, they are staying with a wonderful foster until they can eat on their own. Once they are ready, they will return to AACL while they wait for their forever homes.
