Hobie Beach car guard Sam saw litter in the parking area he looks after and took matters into his own hands. Now he cleans the space every night after dark.
Mandela Bay, South Africa (28 September 2026) – When members of the public weren’t putting the bins at Hobie Beach to good use, car guard Sam took it upon himself to become part of the solution.
Mandela Bay Beachfront Cluster, a local community organisation, recently took to social media to praise Sam for his incredible solo clean-up efforts.
After noticing the disregard some members of the public had shown for throwing their rubbish away responsibly, Sam decided he wanted to help.
“After seeing the ignorance towards using the bins at Hobie Beach, Sam, a Car Guard to that area raised his hand.” the organisation shared. “If we supply the bags, he will clean up the parking every night after dark.”
There should be no tolerance for littering in public spaces – especially along the beachfront, where rubbish can end up directly in the ocean, where it certainly does not belong.
Sam knows this, and after clocking off from a long shift, he cleans up what others have carelessly left behind. It’s a labour of love for the environment, and he asks for nothing in return. Heroes don’t wear capes; sometimes, they wield rubbish bags.
The community organisation says Sam’s solo clean-ups have already made a massive difference, and he has been remunerated for his efforts.
Recently, Sam celebrated his birthday. He received some well-deserved spoils and praise for the fantastic initiative he has shown in keeping the Hobie Beach parking area clean.
