In a world that can often feel overwhelming, South Africans have once again shown that when one of our own is in need, our collective compassion and generosity know no bounds – and in this story, it is literally saving a life.

Cape Town, South Africa (30 September 2026) – When calls to help support a Cape Town chef whose health had deteriorated rapidly were shared far and wide, South Africans responded with a kind of compassion and generosity that is very much keeping him alive.

Earlier this year, 40-year-old Orlando began suffering from severe headaches and vision issues. By June, doctors delivered devastating news that his kidney function was virtually absent.

To stay alive and stabilise his condition while waiting for an eventual transplant, he now needs dialysis three times a week.

Unfortunately, Orlando’s application for public dialysis assistance was denied. And while he managed to secure private medical aid, he is currently locked in a mandatory pre-existing condition waiting period.

This has left Orlando in a critical gap, urgently needing ongoing treatment that he cannot afford. This, too, has been compounded by the fact that his illness has forced him to stop working as a professional chef, cutting off his income completely.

Stepping in to bridge this gap, Proteus Life NPO brought Orlando’s story to light, reaching out to healthcare, community, and humanitarian organisations for sponsorship. They also launched a crowdfunding campaign to help cover his dialysis and immediate medical care.

The public’s response has been immediate and overwhelming.

An outpouring of support from across the country (and beyond) has given Orlando a fighting chance, raising R70,036 in just one month. Thanks to these generous donations, he was able to receive his first fully funded life-saving dialysis session on 2 September, keeping hope alive as he pushes toward his medical aid activation and an eventual transplant.

Orlando has since been able to keep up with his regular sessions thanks to the incredible kindness of everyone who empathised with his fight.

“This is such a huge and emotional milestone for us, and we truly couldn’t have reached it without every single person who donated, shared, encouraged, and stood behind him,” Proteus Life shared.

“Thank you for being part of Orlando’s journey. Your support means more than words can say.”

While the initial response has provided immediate relief, his journey is far from over.

“We completely understand that not everyone is in a position to donate. But if you can contribute or simply share his campaign, it would mean the world to us. Every bit helps bring us closer to the treatment and long-term care Orlando needs,” the organisation added.

South Africa’s overwhelming rally around Orlando has beautifully captured how, when one of our own stumbles, a nation steps up to hold them up.

To help Orlando continue dialysis, stabilise his health, and hopefully reach the point where he can receive a kidney transplant, consider leaving a donation here.
