After making her mark in junior and senior wheelchair tennis, Lesedi Malepe is ready for another international challenge.
South Africa (30 September 2026) – South African wheelchair tennis is continuing to produce promising young talent, and Bridget Lesedi Malepe is ready for her next opportunity on the international stage.
The 18-year-old has been selected as one of just five South African athletes heading to an upcoming international tournament in Portugal, where she will represent the country and test herself against competition from around the world.
It is another important step in what has already been an encouraging wheelchair tennis journey for Lesedi.
She made her mark as a junior by winning the girls’ singles at the Johan Cruyff Foundation African Junior Wheelchair Tennis Camp in 2023. More recently, she reached the women’s singles final at the Breaking Barriers Polokwane Open, continuing to make her presence felt in senior competition.
In a message shared by Tennis South Africa, she highlighted the role of the training camp and the importance of staying fit throughout the season.
“One thing I have taken away from the tournament, I have to stay fit all the time.”
She also thanked SASCOC for giving her the opportunity to train as she worked towards qualifying for Paralympic competition, while acknowledging her coaches for their guidance both on and off the court.
And for Lesedi, the lessons extend beyond what happens during a match. She says the guidance she has received has also taught her about discipline and how to conduct herself away from the court.
Lesedi is now getting ready to fly the South African flag in Portugal.
