When Sergeant Jo-Ann Benn was approached by a panicked grandmother in the early hours of Sunday morning, it wasn’t to handle a dangerous situation, but rather a delicate one: guiding a mother through labour when an ambulance couldn’t arrive in time.

Knysna, South Africa (01 October 2026) – While working the graveyard shift in the early hours of Sunday morning, 27 September, Sergeant Jo-Ann Benn received an urgent call for help – one that didn’t require her to step into crime-fighting mode, but rather called upon her maternal and nurturing instincts.

It became a shift to remember when Sgt Benn, while on patrol with her colleagues, was approached by a distressed community member. A grandmother, struggling to reach an ambulance, was desperately seeking help for her daughter, who was in labour and needed immediate assistance.

Accompanying the panicked grandmother to her White Location home, Sgt Benn immediately stepped in to help the mother, who was already in an advanced stage of labour. Relying on prayer and maternal instincts, Benn delivered a healthy baby girl just after 2 am.

According to SAPS, both mother and infant were transferred safely into the care of emergency medical personnel when the ambulance arrived. They were discharged from hospital on Monday, 28 September.

Benn named the baby girl Nolitha and thanked the Lord for guiding her through the process.

A member of Knysna Police Station, the calm and quick-thinking officer was praised by the Knysna SAPS Management and Community Policing Forum (CPF) for her strong integrity and for going beyond the call of duty.

With the panic settled, thanks to one of their own, the CPF further extended its congratulations to the family of Nolitha and wished them an abundance of blessings in the years to come.

The story has since captured hearts across the internet, drawing thousands of likes and many comments thanking and praising the local officer for not only handling a delicate situation but for doing it with such care and compassion, proving that our officers in blue protect and serve in more ways than one.
