Once a Santa Shoebox recipient himself, Joshua Saal now gives back every year, proving that a little kindness can leave a lasting mark
South Africa (19 October 2026)- Sometimes, a gift is so much more than what’s inside the box. Sometimes, it’s the feeling of knowing that someone, somewhere, thought of you.
For Joshua Saal, the Santa Shoebox Project is a reminder of just that.
Joshua was once a child on the receiving end of a Santa Shoebox, experiencing first-hand the joy of opening a gift packed with care by someone he may never have met.
Years later, he returned to the project, this time not to receive a box, but to give one.
Now, donating a Santa Shoebox every year has become his way of passing that feeling on to another child. It doesn’t get much more full circle than that!
As the Santa Shoebox Project celebrates its 20th birthday, Joshua shared a heartfelt message of thanks to the organisation for two decades of bringing joy, love and hope to children.
He also encouraged others to get involved, reminding them that what may feel like a simple gift to the person packing it could become a treasured memory for the child receiving it.
Because sometimes, the smallest gestures stay with us long after the wrapping paper is gone.
Joshua’s story is a beautiful reminder of how kindness can travel through the years, touching one life before finding its way to another.
To the person who packed Joshua’s box all those years ago, Santa Shoebox Project hopes they get to see this. The child you thought about is thinking about other children now, and the love you gave is being passed on.
So happy 20th birthday, Santa Shoebox Project! Here’s to many more years of making little moments mean the world.
