Handler-and-K9 teams from agencies across the Mother City went snout-to-snout in the city’s first-ever K9 competition on Saturday!

Cape Town, South Africa (19 October 2026) – The Mother City’s four-legged heroes and their handlers gathered on 17 October as the City’s Public Safety Training College hosted its very first K9 competition!

The initiative brought together K9 teams from the Metro Police K9 unit, the Stellenbosch K9 unit, and SANParks to showcase what these working doggies bring to public safety in local communities.

A total of 15 handler-and-dog teams got a chance to demonstrate their sharp skills, discipline and operational readiness in tasks like agility, detection and protection work.

As we have learned – from spotlighting the incredible roles of working dogs across South Africa – these areas all require impressive training and unconditional trust between handler and pup!

Beyond the friendly rivalry, the gathering was hosted to strengthen relationships between different public safety agencies, encourage knowledge-sharing and promote best practices in K9 training and operational deployment.

“This competition offers an opportunity to establish a tradition of excellence, strengthen partnerships between agencies and recognise the valuable contribution of K9 teams to community safety. “ says Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.

“And it’s about so much more than just identifying the best-performing dog or handler, but about celebrating teamwork, discipline, dedication, and the important role K9 units play in keeping our communities safe. I am incredibly proud of our Public Safety Training College for all the hard work that has gone into organising this event, and I look forward to seeing it become a fixture on the annual calendar.” he added.

Among the standout stars of the day was K9 Dash from Table Mountain National Park, who gave a brilliant performance alongside his handler! Dash fetched impressive top honours, securing 1st place and 3rd place in Open Area Detection, as well as 2nd place in Scent Discrimination.

A massive congratulations to every participating team for their inspiring devotion to public safety and sharp show of skill!
