From routine mammogram care to thoughtful pink care packs, Groote Schuur Hospital’s C16 team is encouraging us all to prioritise early detection and share a little extra warmth with those on their cancer journey.

Cape Town, South Africa (20 October 2026) – Only a few, and very courageous, people will ever truly know the weight that comes with a breast cancer diagnosis. But Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a gentle reminder that none of us has to let them carry it alone. Whether it’s supporting patients and survivors, speaking up for early detection, or raising money for research, our compassion and solidarity can make a world of difference to those facing mountains few will ever have to climb.

For the C16 Mammography team at Groote Schuur Hospital, every appointment is an opportunity to offer reassurance, answer questions, and help patients feel supported – whether they are attending a routine mammogram, navigating a new diagnosis, or returning after treatment.

According to the Groote Schuur Hospital Trust, during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, this dedicated team is encouraging everyone to know their breasts, have any changes checked, and speak to their healthcare provider about when to have a mammogram. Early detection can make all the difference.

To extend a little care and compassion to patients navigating treatment, every October, the radiology department also brings a little extra comfort to patients through thoughtful donations from current staff, former colleagues, and their families.

“Their generosity helps the team share love and encouragement with newly diagnosed patients, cancer survivors and those attending routine screening,” Groote Schuur Hospital Trust said.

Recently, these donations included beautifully packaged pink care packs filled with treats, tissues, and toiletries – a small gesture with a big impact to not only brighten these brave warriors’ hospital visits, but to remind them they’re cared for.

The hospital trust thanked every contributor to the initiative, where every contribution, big or small, reminds patients that they are seen, valued, and cared for.
