While a pair of school shoes might seem like a small detail, for a child who has experienced hardship, it represents dignity and a sense of belonging, which is why the 13th Annual Home from Home Amble is inviting the community to walk together and make that difference.
Cape Town, South Africa (21 October 2026) – Every child deserves to walk into their new classroom on the first day of school feeling proud, confident, and ready to learn.
To help make that a reality for children in foster care, residents across the Deep South are invited to lace up their walking shoes for a special morning together.
The 13th Annual Home from Home Amble takes place on Sunday, 8 November 2026 and is a much-loved community tradition that brings people together for a scenic 10km stroll from Scarborough to Kommetjie.
Beyond the beautiful walk, every step helps raise funds to put a brand-new pair of school shoes on the feet of 140 children and young people cared for by Home from Home, giving them the best possible start to the 2027 school year.
At just R200 per pair, every donation will help a child take an important step towards a successful school year.

Since 2005, Home from Home has provided supported and supervised cluster foster care to orphaned, abused, neglected and vulnerable children across the Western Cape. Today, the organisation operates 35 foster homes in 16 communities, caring for more than 200 children and young people.
At the heart of Home from Home’s work is its unique Model of Care.
“Children are welcomed into loving family homes where they live with a foster mother and up to six foster siblings, offering them a second chance to experience the security, stability and belonging of family life. This nurturing foundation enables children to benefit fully from the educational, emotional and developmental support programmes that help them overcome early adversity and grow into confident, engaged young adults,” explains Lala Lakey, who runs Home from Home’s Fundraising & Communication.
School shoes may seem like a small thing, but for a child who has experienced trauma and hardship, they represent dignity, confidence and the opportunity to feel like they belong.
“Every person who joins the Amble or makes a donation is helping us ensure that children in our care have the essentials they need to succeed at school and thrive in life,” Lala says.
Now in its 13th year, the Amble has become a cherished fixture on the Deep South calendar, bringing together families, friends, neighbours and supporters for a relaxed walk along one of the Cape Peninsula’s most beautiful coastal routes. Participants can enjoy a morning outdoors while making a meaningful difference in the lives of local children.
Whether walking in memory of a loved one, spending time with family, or simply enjoying the fresh sea air, every step taken helps provide children in foster care with the tools they need to learn, grow and build brighter futures.
