Table Mountain

Andrew Patterson is an avid hiker, raising money by climbing Table Mountain 365 times. While climbing recently, he found two people in need of assistance.

Andrew Patterson, also known as the Renaissance Guy, has pledged to hike up Table Mountain every day in 2018 to raise R1 million on the donation-based crowdfunding platform, BackaBuddy.

365 UbuntuClimbs is an initiative to show what we can accomplish when we work together and that “No Contribution is too small”.

“I’m climbing Table Mountain every day this year in 2018 so collectively we can empower 1 family, one child, one life by simply sponsoring (or as I call – investing) R1 per climb.”

Andrew plans to empower South Africans using the money for 3 causes close to his heart:

  • Habitat for Humanity to build homes and give a family a basic right to safety;
  • One Heart for kids to help teach a child to read
  • and The Sunflower Fund to help increase their donor registry and give someone a second lease on life.

His goal is to help people who have had no choice in life and have faced hardship from birth due to poverty, lack of education or health issues. His three charities not only help uplift, but they save lives daily.

“I’m passionate about this country and believe we have incredible power when we work together. It’s going to take great perseverance and dedication and that’s why I’m dedicating a full year to achieve this.

We can and we are already doing it. Be part of the Ubuntu family.”

He has just celebrated getting halfway to his goal, reaching 26 weeks of great and not so great climbs. With the weather taking a big turn in Cape Town, the climbs have been tougher and wetter.

“Warnings of four days of foul weather mean I’m even more alert than usual, like a cat whose tail’s been stood on eight times already.”

On a recent climb, Andrew came across two hikers who thought that the Cable Car would be operational but due to the weather, it was not.

“My week started off with an incredible sunset hike where I did my second fastest summit. Thankfully, because I ran into hikers expecting the cable car to work (it’s closed) and having come from Skeleton Gorge (Kirstenbosch Gardens which is a 3-hour hike) I safely brought them down Platteklip.

We barely made it down before dark set in but thankfully no injuries. Incredible to think my snap decision to do a sweep around the extremity up top meant I ran into them.”

Andrew saved them from a number of bad situations and managed to keep them safe through-out the decent. He hikes to do good, and ends up doing more good than he set out to.
