afrikaans

Afrikaans is one of the official languages of South Africa but many people struggle to speak or understand it, especially the words containing the famous “R”

A young girl being taught to pronouce Afrikaans words has the South African internet in fits of giggles. Particularly because like many, she really struggles with words containing the letter “R”.

The R is a struggle for most non-Afrikaans speaking South Africans. Anyone who has ever sat through an entire school career of Afrikaans lessons or has watched their child do so, will feel the pain of the guy in this video who is desperate to get his daughter to do her r’s the right way.

It is all about how you use your tongue when pronoucing it. You need that vibration to roll the R. The girl in the video is English and the video was captioned “the struggle is real” by mom Claire Whyte.

The young girl also struggled with her “oo” sounds, like “loop” so of course when you added the “oo” and “r” together in words like “voor” and “oor” it is just too funny to watch. Her dad nearly had a melt down when she got “roomys” (meaning ice-cream) right.

Watch the video below, if you have had this same struggle, let us know in the comment section.
