Rocco Da Silva is an inspiring 9-year-old working to change the world and to inspire children and their parents to do more for planet Earth by creating youth club.
Strand, Western Cape – Rocco Da Silva, a 9-year-old with a plan of action, recently won the Waste Reduction Youth Warrior Award at the annual PETCO awards for his efforts in inspiring his fellow youths.
Rocco started a club to create awareness and get the youth in his area to commit to participating in monthly beach and community clean-ups. Over the last 14 months, members have collected more than 950kg of rubbish off a local 400m stretch of beach.
He called it ‘The Future Kids Club’. The club has been running for just over a year now and has had great success. Thanks to collaboration from several businesses, the youths have had all the resources needed to make a big difference.
Rocco hopes to inspire not only children but also their parents. He has a stern message for parents about playing their part in initiatives like this one.
“My message to South Africans is to stop using single-use plastic items. And to join beach cleanups, not necessarily mine but any beach cleanup.”
“The parents must stop being lazy, don’t watch your Netflix series. Take your kids to beach cleanups, take them out, take them to areas to see how it affects planet Earth.”
