Brett Nash is an incredible young man surrounded by equally unbelievable people, especially the staff at his local SPAR that make every day beautiful.
Johannesburg, South Africa – Brett Nash, 15-years-old, has lived his entire life with a clinically undiagnosed rare disease. A group of doctors have managed to diagnose one of his conditions, Distal Arthrogryposis.
Distal arthrogryposis is a disorder characterised by joint deformities (contractures) that restrict movement in the hands and feet. The characteristic features of this condition include permanently bent fingers and toes (camptodactyly), overlapping fingers, and a hand deformity in which all of the fingers are angled outward toward the fifth finger (ulnar deviation). Clubfoot, which is an inward- and upward-turning foot, is also commonly seen with Distal Arthrogryposis.
Every evening, Brett and his mother Tammy visit their local SPAR and the staff there always make it a special occasion for Brett. Tammy can’t really pinpoint exactly how the Spar shopping routine started but believes that it happened a little over five years ago, and every evening since then, it has become the highlight of Brett’s day.
“He is always singing a tune as he is pretty much non-verbal and I think the one evening it just happened to be the tune to the National Anthem and it just got picked up from there.”
Every night is different. Sometimes it’s just two employees, and sometimes it’s up to twenty, all depending on what time in the evening the family get there and which staff are on duty for that shift.
Brett’s story went viral when the staff all came together and sang for him at the entrance of the store. The original video has over 40,000 views. Now another video has gone even further in warming people’s hearts. One of the regular cashiers, Ayanda, taught Brett how to pack the groceries in the bags.
He can be seen watching closely as she shows him how to do it and then bursts with joy when he does it himself. The staff at the SPAR love Brett and do everything to make sure he has a great experience each night. They even self-funded a birthday party for him earlier this year.
The part that really got us blubbering was when Ayanda, the cashier stopped what she was doing to wipe Brett’s mouth. That act of kindness shows just how loving and compassionate the staff are. The staff at SPAR Retail Crossing are all heroes.
