Gallery of Champions celebrates Japanese inspired Springbok works with a digital auction designed to raise funds for rugby development via Let’s Play!
Johannesburg, South Africa – SuperSport has launched a 24-hour pop-up art gallery called the Gallery of Champions – that celebrates some of the star Springbok performers ahead of the Rugby World Cup!
The new art exhibition follows the incredibly successful collaboration between Marvel and the Super Rugby tournament earlier this year.
Four of South Africa’s rugby teams adopted a super cool new kit inspired by Spider-Man, Thor, Black Panther, and Captain America for the Super Rugby Tournament earlier this year, and South Africans fell in love with the unique idea.
“During our Super Rugby campaign, fans engaged extensively with the link between the South African Super Rugby franchises and the affiliated Marvel characters that represented these teams”, says Clinton van der Berg SuperSport spokesperson.
SuperSport decided once again that they wanted to adopt a unique approach to launching its Rugby World Cup 2019 coverage as well.
“We considered the aspects that make Japan unique – elements such as Karaoke, Sushi, Bullet Trains all spring to mind, but there is a synergistic link between superheroes and a Japanese, artistic export – Anime and Manga artistry.”
Gallery of Champions sees the commissioning of five South African up-and-coming artists who have completed three illustrations each, of South African Rugby players. These illustrations were exhibited for one night only in Johannesburg.
SuperSport reached out via a tweet, asking if there are young South African illustrators who have a notable Japanese influence in their work and was pleasantly surprised to uncover five extremely talented individuals.
Van der Berg continues, “We were introduced to the following artists who have illustrated three Springboks each in limited edition A1 prints (thank you to Epson for printing these artworks) at the Gallery Of Champions. These artists are Seyabonga Vincent “Vindollar” Lebeko, André Human, Corné Nel, Joel “Cyzo” Matladi, and Tyler Jade.”
