Mpho Bowers is an inspiring seven-year-old from Edenvale who just broke a long-standing record by winning 33 consecutive chess games.
Edenvale, South Africa – ‘Go For Chess’, founded by Clyde Wolpe, a former South African Chess Champion shared some very exciting news earlier this month. Mpho Bowers, who trains at the chess centre, recently broke a long-standing record by winning 33 consecutive games of chess.
“Congratulations to 7 yr old Mpho Bowers who got 7 out of 7 wins in Tshwane Closed! This was his 12th Tournament Win this year! Unbeaten for 43 games. Outstanding achievement, well done Mpho!”
In an interview with News24, Mpho’s father shared that while Mpho loves chess, he dreams of becoming a pilot when he grows up. Mpho’s love of chess started when he was a mere three-years-old and his father taught him the basic moves. It was during a tough time in their lives, Mpho’s mother passed away and the loss was very hard on the then three-year-old.
The chess gave Mpho something to focus on. He then entered his first tournament at the age of five and the rest is history. On the 17th of August, just one day after his birthday, Mpho had won 26 consecutive games, meaning he was on par with the long-standing record.
“Every great champion needs a great rival.” This weekend (1st of September) I broke a SA record by winning my 33rd consecutive game and becoming 2019 Tshwane Closed u8 Champion. The reward for so many hours of practice and sacrifices are worth it!”
Not only does Mpho have a love for chess, he is also loves to play tennis and take part in karate. The young champion has a very bright future and we can’t wait to see what he gets up to next.
We are so proud to see Mpho doing so well, it shows you are never too young to start learning something. Mpho is a great source of inspiration!
