Teachers at the Orlando Secondary School in Soweto are celebrating their 5% increase in the pass rate and credit the help of weekend tutoring by Non-Profit Organizations.
Soweto, South Africa – Principal Thomzana Mrwetyana set a goal for the class of 2019. She wanted to improve the pass rate and make sure that teachers put more effort into the education of the students. The hard work paid off as the school’s pass rate went up by 5%.
To ensure the pass rate would increase, principal Thomzana encouraged teachers to work alongside local Non-Profit Organizations (NPOs) and take part in weekend tutoring. Teachers gave up their Sundays to offer extra lessons, and Project O helped out on Saturdays.
Project O is a youth development organisation that aims to give underprivileged students a better chance at attaining their goals. The NPO chose Orlando Secondary School as the first and most significant project. They ran several tutoring sessions at the school, which included a hearty meal at lunchtime.

The classes ran every Saturday from 8 am to 1 pm, and each of the volunteer instructors tutored for two hours each month, per subject. The subjects covered were Maths, Maths Literacy, Physical Science, English, Accounting, Business, Economics, Geography, History and Zulu.
The NPO even focussed on stress and time management, study skills and mental health which play an essential role in a matriculants life.
The success of the school students came down to a joint effort and just goes to show that when students are given the resources, they need to succeed, they will succeed! Hopefully, more schools will go the extra mile in 2020 to assist students who want to learn.
