Mama Bongi’s incredible lockdown business helps support her children in Zim

Mama Bongi used to bake cookies for the ladies at the office where she worked; they started asking her to make them for order and a business blossomed.

Wynberg Chelsea, South Africa (03 November 2020) – Mama Bongi was inspired to launch a business during lockdown to earn an additional income to support her children who are currently living in Zimbabwe. She is an incredible baker with a talent for chocolate chip cookies so she started selling them.

She runs her business while still working her day job so that she can support her lifestyle in South Africa as well as her children and family in Zim.

“I live at and work in the kitchen at my mentor’s office in Wynberg Chelsea (which is a house). Working for Amazing Spaces is my other job when I am not baking, and the ‘gals’ there have helped me to grow the Mama Bongi cookie business. This allows me to send money home to my children (who I had to leave at home in Zimbabwe).

I always dreamed of being a teacher and this cookie business allows me to lift up and teach others to cook with me. I am now able to improve my kids’ lives as well as those around me. This is a dream come true for me. I have also always loved cooking.

I started by making cookies for Amazing Spaces’ clients and they loved them so much that they started asking if they could buy them. This is how the idea of Mama Bongi’s cookies was born. I am grateful every day for the opportunities and love shown to me, and want to be able to pay it forward to others.”

Mama’s business has gone from strength to strength and she was even able to introduce a vegan chocolate chip cookie option.

Thanks to the help of the ladies who believed in her idea, Mama Bongi has been able to set up a website, social media pages and even has stunning branding and packaging. Her small scale business has grown into something that can really change her future.

I am so excited! Clients are loving my cookies and our new packets are great!lockdown created this change … sometimes it’s the most difficult events that create opportunities. We couldn’t get hold of our normal packaging so a friend of Julia’s donated these brown bags that she had at home which she never used. Julia hand-wrote all the labels (there was no other choice 😉 but now we have had stamps made which is much quicker!
