While SA is open for tourists, all the usual holidaymakers won’t be leaving their countries due to the pandemic which is why Shelley Finch is hosting a food drive to support Cape Town’s hospitality industry workers.

Cape Town, South Africa (02 December 2020) – Shelley Finch has spent most of her lockdown advocating for others. Throughout the lockdown, Shelley helped families that were struggling to keep a roof over their heads, put food on the table and find work.

Each week she would reach out to friends and family to help and each week she was blown away by the generosity of those willing to help.

Shelley also managed to crowdfund enough to feed over 200 families by providing them with Nutriwell Nutritional Packs. Nurtiwell Nutritional Packs comprise of 1kg Instant Porridge, 1kg Instant Shake, 1kg Thick Vegetable Soup and 1kg Soya Mince Stew.

Now she wants to support the Cape Town Hospitality and Tourism Industry. These industries, while making a slow recovery, won’t bounce back in time for the workers to have a merry festive season. Many families are still struggling and the last thing Shelley wants them to worry about, is what they will eat.

Shelley has created another crowdfund to help supply the Nutriwell packs as well as meats and other festive goodies to families in need this festive season. If you would like to support her cause, you can do so here.

“While many of us hoped that life would return to “normal” by the end of the year, the virus resurgence in the Western Cape means that COVID-19 restrictions will likely be tightened ahead of the festive season.

There are now 11.1 million unemployed South Africans. The unemployment rate among black women in particular is 51.2%. Thousands of mothers will not be able to provide sufficiently for their children this month. The hardest-hit industry is obviously our tourism sector, which provides work to tens of thousands of people in Cape Town alone. The months ahead are looking bleak for them as, although South Africa’s borders are open, the tourists from across the world that we usually host in our beautiful city over summer won’t be travelling.

My big dream to end off this year on a positive and hopeful note is to be able to supply 300 families, who have breadwinners employed in the tourism and hospitality industry, with the supplies to cook a hot, delicious meal on Christmas Day.

In order to reach that target, I need to raise R300 000 before 18 December 2020.

If you have ever travelled to South Africa on holiday and enjoyed the hospitality and smiles of our beautiful people, please consider supporting this drive. If you had planned to come to our beautiful country on holiday this year, we can’t wait to welcome you and we hope you will consider sending some love ahead of you in the form of a donation to this project. If you are from South Africa or a South African living abroad, I don’t have to tell you what this will mean to our tourism and event workers this year.

My request to you today is to consider gifting a family Christmas dinner this year by donating R600.00 or $40 or £30. If that is a bit too much for you to manage (completely understandable, it has been a tough year!), I would be so grateful for any amount that you are able to share. (Never underestimate how small donation amounts helped us to get to a BIG total last time.)

And if you are not in a position to donate anything at this time, sharing this crowdfunding campaign on social media or with friends and family that might be able to help would be absolutely amazing. Teamwork makes the dream work.

In closing, let me say thank you once again for your support at a time when I’m sure you were also feeling afraid and anxious. I hope that the universe showers you with abundance in the months to come and that your family is blessed with good health and lots and lots of love and happiness. You certainly deserve it.

Let’s hope that the next time you hear from me it will be to say “Happy Holidays!” and “We made it!”

Funds raised will be split between Nutriwell and a partner NPO who will assist me in buying the Christmas groceries. 100% of funds raised goes to the purchasing of food and distribution logistics.”
