Funky Hats or Happy Socks, which do you think the scholars of SPARK Soweto voted in? The scholars got to learn about Freedom Day by casting their own votes.
Soweto, South Africa (28 April 2021) – Understanding the importance of Freedom Day is something educators at SPARK Soweto have worked very hard towards teaching their scholars. It has been 27 years since the first democratic vote in South Africa.
SPARK Soweto decided to teach their scholars about the importance of a free and fair election. Not only would this give the scholars a hands-on learning lesson, but it would also add a little fun following the results.
“Teachers at SPARK Soweto took educating scholars about Freedom Day to a new height. They held an election to educate scholars about Voting and the significance of Freedom Day. The school principal was excited when scholars lined up with their masks on, social distancing and casting their first vote.” – Miss Gundo Mmbi, SPARK Soweto Principal.
A campaign was launched for the scholars to choose between one of two fun dress-up days at the school. Scholars had to vote between ´Wearing a Funky Hat´ or ´Wearing Happy Socks´ to school. This initiative is important; scholars should be educated on why our public holidays are important and what they represent. It is essential to learn that the public holiday is more than just a day off.
The parents were excited to learn that their scholars are learning about Casting their first vote. The experience was made real by the school-made IEC boxes and the privacy of their vote.
“It is important to educate our scholars and raise awareness about the importance of social justice and raising responsible citizens.”
Miss Mmbi, the Principal, has been featured on Good Things Guy before after she wrote a letter to her Grade 1 scholar asking to be her friend. Miss Mmbi is a determined 29-year-old whose goal is to change lives, one child at a time.
