‘Jessica, we are live’ is officially Southern Africa’s newest catchphrase… and the internet is thriving
Namibia (10 June 2021) – Every now and then, something happens on live TV that instantly becomes bigger than the moment itself… not because it was planned, but because it was so painfully human, so awkwardly relatable, and so unintentionally hilarious that social media has no choice but to turn it into a shared cultural event.
This week, that moment arrived with four words that have already been adopted into the Southern African dictionary of “please stop” phrases:
“Jessica, we are live.”
The line came from a viral newsroom clip where Jessica was corrected mid-broadcast by a newsreader, a sports journalist who clearly didn’t like the way the intro was being delivered and wanted it said differently… while the small detail of the newsroom being LIVE on-air seemed to not matter at all. The result was instant second-hand embarrassment, followed by instant internet obsession.
And now, the phrase is being used for everything… your friend oversharing at dinner, someone being loud in public, a colleague sending a risky message in the work chat, or that one person at a braai who starts acting like the main character while everyone silently watches in horror.
You can watch it here:
Social media, of course, reacted the only way it knows how… with immediate, collective, completely involuntary cringing, followed by the kind of laughter that comes from recognising a human moment so painfully relatable that it almost feels personal, because let’s be honest: we have all been in a situation where someone decided to reprimand another person loudly, dramatically, and unnecessarily… while the rest of the room stood there silently like, “Please. Please stop. We can all hear you.”
