Some bizarre cold weather will hit the western parts of South Africa from tomorrow. The chilly weather will also bring rain and snow. The Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal are set to suffer from this shivering weather too.
South Africa (25 August 2021) – Some South Africans are bracing for a lingering cold in the air and wet weather, with temperatures expected to plunge ahead of a ‘severe’ storm warning. The storm is likely to cause flooding, thunderstorms, damaging winds, and brutal chilly temperatures – and may even bring snow.
The Western Cape Disaster Management Centre says the storm is expected to make landfall in the Western Cape around 12:00 tomorrow.
“The storm will include disruptive rainfall and is expected to continue throughout Friday,” the Centre said.
The MEC for Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, Anton Bredell, says the areas which can expect the brunt of the weather will be Cape Town, Drakenstein, Overstrand, Stellenbosch and Theewaterskloof.
According to the South African Weather Service, it will spread to the western and southern parts of the Northern Cape overnight.
Snowfall is also expected over the high-lying areas of the Western Cape and the southern and western high-lying areas of the Northern Cape, mainly from Friday spreading to the high-lying areas of the Eastern Cape and the Drakensberg region of KwaZulu-Natal during Saturday.
Prior to landfall of the approaching cold front, gale force winds (40 to 60 km/h) are likely to occur over parts of the interior of South Africa.
“Such strong, gusty winds may cause difficulties for high-sided vehicles along major routes, especially over the interior of the Western Cape, the interior of the Eastern Cape, the Northern Cape, western Free State and the western parts of the North West province from Thursday into Friday,” the Weather Service said.
