A South African who spends his time fixing potholes has managed to repair over 2,500 road defects!
Potchefstroom, South Africa (08 August 2022) – A local Potchefstroom man is being hailed a hero after fixing over 2,500 potholes while creating employment for five people!
Dirk Venter says that he is motivated by the desire to keep his town in a good condition and has been doing the selfless work of fixing potholes for over a decade now, without the help of the local municipality, whose job it is to maintain the town’s infrastructure.
“From the beginning, the potholes bothered me a lot, and if you want to do it with your brain, you will never do it. You have to do it with your heart, and even you support something like this. You must not think with your brain to support. You must think with your heart otherwise you will make no success,” Dirk Venter explains.
Venter started the pothole project using his own funds, but local businesses have supported him with donations. The Potchefstroom resident has been very creative with fixing the potholes by recycling left-over material from road construction to fill the holes and then cover them with tar. His initiative has grown and now employs five people, some of whom were left jobless after the pandemic.
