Dr Imtaz Sooliman joined three fellow South Africans in receiving honorary doctorates from the University of the Western Cape this week.
Cape Town, South Africa (02 December 2022) – Recipients of Honorary Doctorates were honoured at the University of the Western Cape this week. The ceremony honoured recipients from both 2021 and 2022. Dr Imtaz Sooliman, the founder of Gift of the Givers, was one of the four recipients.
Other recipients on the night included Dr Allan Boesak (theologian, author and political activist), Professor Zoë Wicomb (author and academic) and Professor Kwesi Kwaa Prah (internationally recognised as an Africanist thinker, author, sociology professor, and founder of the Centre for Advanced Studies of African Society).
The honours are given to those who “exemplify creativity, scholarship, selflessness and the courage of their convictions to make a difference in society”.
This was the first year that the university hosted a special graduation ceremony and gala dinner. Several people were also honoured with gold medals at the prestigious event. The late Desmond Tutu was remembered for his 25 years of service to the university as the Chancellor of UWC. Chancellor Archbishop Thabo Makgoba, who has since taken up the role, shared his thoughts on the event and commended the work done by the four honourees.
“This group of honourees are just amazing South Africans… we focus so much on the challenges we face as a country and easily slip into negativity, and here we have these beautiful, hard working, selfless individuals who inspire hope, and we must say well done, good and faithful servant.”
It is wonderful to see South Africa’s best, honoured for all they do to better our country.
