The Rhino Project has been given the metaphorical and literal “wings” -an anti-poaching airwing- it needs to soar above the challenges and protect South Africa’s most vulnerable wildlife.

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (30 October 2025) – Sometimes generosity yields gifts that simply bring joy, and other times it inspires those who make a profound difference. Remarkably, some gifts have the power to do both!

Over the past 30 months, the Zululand Anti-Poaching Airwing (ZAP-Wing) has served as a vital force in protecting wildlife in KwaZulu-Natal and its surroundings and supporting rangers on the ground.

During this time, Project Rhino’s dedicated pilots have flown 1,295 hours – hours that have truly mattered. Thanks to this aircraft, 14 poached rhinos have been located, enabling vital investigations and data collection. Two wounded rhinos were detected and successfully treated, while four orphaned calves from poached females were found and safely relocated to a rhino orphanage.

The ZAP-Wing has assisted in multiple dehorning and collaring operations, drastically reducing helicopter time and costs. It has also responded to critical incidents, including the detection of dog poachers within Rhino Project’s member reserves.

“This incredible impact would not have been possible without The Brady Hunter Foundation, whose generous contribution made the acquisition of our Savanna aircraft a reality”, Project Rhino shares.

The Brady Hunter Foundation is a United States-based nonprofit organisation committed to supporting the voiceless and vulnerable, from conducting animal rescues and protecting endangered species and habitats to aiding communities facing adversity.

“Their support has strengthened aerial surveillance, improved rapid response, and ultimately helped save countless rhino lives,” Rhino Project says.

“From all of us at Project Rhino, and on behalf of the rangers, pilots, and conservation partners who rely on this essential air support, thank you, The Brady Hunter Foundation, for flying alongside us in this fight for our rhinos.”

Some gifts really do have the power to make a profound difference. The ZAP-Wing, made possible by cross-continental generosity, is now directly boosting Project Rhino’s mission to protect our treasured rhinos.
