After the passing of their beloved owner, dogs Bukhara and Summer’s entire world was turned upside down. However, the community rallied to share their story far and wide, rooting for the pair to stay together. The result? An update that’s left us with happy sniffles!
Cape Town, South Africa (30 January 2026) – Those who knew him well best describe David Katz as a true dolphin whisperer and guardian of the ocean. He spent his life connecting with the sea, protecting marine life, and caring for his beloved dogs, Bukhara and Summer.
When the heartbreaking news of David’s passing circulated, an outpouring of concern for Bukhara and Summer followed. Both dogs were admitted to the Cape of Good Hope SPCA’s care while their future remained uncertain.
“People from all over shared their story, hoping these two bonded fur babies would not have to lose everything after already losing so much,” the SPCA said.
Today, the SPCA is happy to share the news that many were waiting for: Bukhara and Summer have been adopted – together – and are settling into their new home beautifully!
“After the loss of Dave, their entire world changed. Now, they have found safety, comfort, and a family who understands the depth of their bond and the journey they’ve been on. Seeing them calm, loved, and at peace is a powerful reminder of what community and kindness can achieve.”
The news of their successful adoption has brought a wave of love and joy across the internet, with many people who were rooting for these furbabies sharing sweet messages:
“Such wonderful news. Dave was a friend of mine; he gave those dogs an incredible life. So glad they still have each other and a loving home after losing their incredible and enigmatic father,” Daniel Solomon shared.
“Thank you to the SPCA for having the patience to find the right home for them together, and a HUGE thank you to the earth angels that adopted them. They love the water and were often on the SUP with Dave, so happy to see pictures of them looking content, much,” wrote Helen Byrnes.
We’re so moved by this story and so happy that Dave’s dogs have found a warm home together. We applaud the SPCA’s role in their journey and join them in thanking everyone who raised their voices for Bukhara and Summer.
