KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (22 October 2024) – In a moving display of compassion and determination, the boys of Highbury Preparatory School have once again proven themselves to be true champions for rhino conservation!

In a tradition that has spanned over 14 years, WILDTRUST was honoured to celebrate the amazing success of this year’s Maputaland Challenge, a strenuous 75km run along the KwaZulu-Natal coastline, with Highbury Preparatory School.

The future of our Rhino populations in South Africa is reliant on ambassadors who are compassionate individuals prepared to do something meaningful to assist our Rhinos.

The community of Highbury Preparatory School in Hillcrest has an active Wildlands’ Rhino Ambassador.

According to WILDTRUST, Paddy Collins, a teacher at the school, has played a key role in organizing the Maputaland Challenge over the years.

This event is a 75 km run from Sodwana Bay to Bhanga Nek, following back roads parallel to the KwaZulu-Natal coastline.

The challenge aims to raise environmental awareness among the students and generate funds for their chosen charities.

Highbury boys shine as rhino heroes.

This year, the boys surpassed all expectations, raising an incredible R225,000 for the safekeeping of their adopted rhinos, Tai and Baleka, at Somkhanda Game Reserve.

The boys showcased their unwavering commitment to protecting these magnificent animals by running at least 40km.

Mr Lacock, headmaster of Highbury, expressed his pride in the boys’ grit and determination during the run, reinforcing the significance of their contribution to conservation efforts.

“We extend our heartfelt thanks to the school staff, parents, and the boys for all their efforts,” WILDTRUST said.
