Innocent Zungu is more than just a talented sand sculptor; he’s a passionate advocate for wildlife conservation. Recently, while visiting Wilderness Beach, he was spotted sculpting a beautiful, realistic rhino as a powerful message about the plight of endangered rhinos.
Wilderness, South Africa (30 May 2025) – One of Cape Town’s talented and beloved sand sculptors, Innocent Zungu, recently took his craft along the Garden Route coastal stretch to Wilderness Beach.
While putting the finishing touches to an impressively crafted sea sand rhino sculpture on the beachfront, he was met by George Herald’s Jeff Ayliffe, who was quite intrigued by Innocent’s work.
In a video interview, Innocent revealed that he was visiting the charming seaside town for a few days with a friend and was inspired to sculpt a rhino as his way of appreciating the largely endangered wildlife species and increasing awareness about its plight and significance.
“Rhino is one of the special species. We all know. They are in great danger. So, I think this is a part of my work that god has given to me to travel places and send awareness of rhino killings and that it should stop,” Innocent said.
The rhino sculpture, boasting the most impressive defining lines and real-life inspired features, took Innocent only one and a half hours to make.
His work has won the admiration and love of many beachgoers, especially in Cape Town, where he is popularly known as “Super Sandman” and for displaying his artworks on local beaches.
While sand sculpting remains Innocent’s bread and butter, wildlife conservation is also close to his heart. He hopes to soon start a project back in his hometown of Hluhluwe in Kwa-Zulu Natal, to protect wild bees by educating youngsters in his community about the ecological importance of the insect, rather than killing them out of fear.
Innocent credits his unique talent to the man above and hopes that through his gift, he will continue to inspire and raise awareness among everyday South Africans.
