He may not wear a cape, but Inspector Lwazi proves time and again that doing good doesn’t need one.
Cape Town, South Africa (31 October 2025) – It seems there’s no situation too tricky for Inspector Lwazi Ntungele! The Cape of Good Hope SPCA inspector, who recently made national news for facing his lifelong fear of water to save a stranded dog named Drifter, has done it once more.
This time, his rescue involved a cat stuck high up on a streetlight in Gugulethu.
When residents noticed the frightened kitty clinging to the top of of the light, things became tense quickly.
“The community was in a bit of a frenzy – some believed it could be witchcraft,” Inspector Ntungele shared. “But I educated them that there are a variety of things that are at work here. I explained that the cat may have been chased by dogs or climbed up while hunting birds.”
After scoping the scene, he called in the Gugulethu Fire Station team for backup. They arrived promptly, but their ladders couldn’t quite reach. That’s when the Roeland Street Fire Station crew joined in with a cherry picker, and together, they managed to bring the little adventurer safely down.
“We set off to save the kitty – and we did,” said Inspector Ntungele.
The cat was taken to the SPCA for a full health check. An owner has since come forward, and the SPCA is in the process of confirming ownership.
The team effort saved a frightened kitty who could have suffered a worse fate, if Inspector Lwazi had not swooped in to educate around animals, and save the day.
We are huge admirers of Lwazi’s headline scooping rescues – it’s a reminder of what most Inspectors do on a daily basis. They show up for animals in need, whatever the challenge looks like.
