In a heartwarming display of compassion, learners at Itemogele Primary School in Protea Glen, came to the rescue of a stray dog who chose one of their classrooms as her birthing den.
Protea Glen, South Africa (22 January 2025) – A pregnant stray dog looking for a cosy spot to deliver its litter wandered into Itemogele Primary School in Protea Glen, Soweto and gave birth under one of the classrooms. Yes – not inside but underneath a converted shipping container classroom, creating a nesting hideout in the ground for her four pups.
While not the most ideal of spots, the school’s learners in collaboration with Soweto Animal Rescue & Advisory Centre’s (SARAC) Jerry Rangers went above and beyond to make sure this mother and her babies were well looked after and safely rescued.
According to the animal rescue, the young animal heroes ensured that the mother had access to food and water, so she could take better care of her babies while waiting for help from SARAC to arrive as the mother was very nervous and wouldn’t let anyone approach her.
“The SARAC team spent hours trying to crawl under the shallow opening of the classrooms to get to the mother and puppies
“Our perseverance paid off, the mother with her four babies were rescued,” SARAC said.
The shining stars of Itemogele Primary School are thanked for their heartwarming display of care, showing that compassion knows no bounds and that animals too, should be loved and protected!
