Love Howick is creating a community where both people and nature thrive by equipping the unemployed residents of uMngeni with in-demand skills in the green economy, restoring dignity and the environment.
Howick, KwaZulu-Natal (27 October 2025) – In a powerful move to tackle unemployment and environmental challenges, Love Howick NPC has launched 150 learnership opportunities for the unemployed residents of uMngeni!
This innovative Green Learn to Earn programme, delivered in partnership with Duzi Umngeni Conservation Trust (DUCT) and the National Social Employment Fund (NSEF), is designed to build a resilient, local green economy.
The year-long programme is built on a unique Work, Study, and Startup model, directly supporting Love Howick’s five foundational pillars: Poverty Alleviation, Environmental Stewardship, Economic Development, Education & Skills, and Community Unity.
“We are not just creating jobs; we are building a sustainable future for uMngeni,” said Ma Hogarty, CEO of Love Howick.
“This program is a game-changer. It’s about equipping people with in-demand skills in the green economy, restoring our natural environment, and fostering a new generation of local entrepreneurs. We are creating hope, purpose, and long-term pathways to opportunity.”
Programme Impact and Structure
Participants will gain practical, accredited skills in:
- Waste management, recycling, and upcycling.
- Environmental restoration and waterway care with DUCT.
- Sustainable agriculture and food security.
- Micro-enterprise development. Each learner will be guided by dedicated Educa on and Business Buddies, providing essential mentorship and real-world coaching to translate skills into viable income-generating activities or small startups
Environmental and Economic Benefits
The initiative is set to deliver significant measurable benefits for the uMngeni municipality, including:
- Reduction of illegal dumping and increased recycling rates.
- Rehabilitation of local rivers and green spaces.
- Development of sustainable food gardens.
- Creation of new, eco-friendly micro-businesses.
