Dam levels have just crossed the 65% mark so the City of Cape Town officials have asked to relax water restrictions, once 85% is reached, it can happen
Capetonians have reduced their water usage to 513 million litres per day in an effort to save water. However, the goal of 450 million per day is still in play. With dam levels officially at 65% as of today, 30 August 2018, there is hope.
The City of Cape Town deputy mayor Ian Neilson put in a request to lower the water restrictions last week. The hope was to relieve the strain on some of the farmers affected by the strict commercial rules.
They have received feedback and it has been confirmed that water restrictions will only be relaxed when dams reach 85%. That means there is only 20% to go… Time to start those rain dances again.
A combination of rain and melted snow flowed into the rivers that head towards important dams. Thanks to the snow and rain, dam levels have jumped from 60.1% to 65.1%.
The dams are looking really great and people are hopeful, however, it is still very important to stick to the 50-litre per day limit per person. The sooner the dams reach 85% the sooner that amount will increase.
There are indications that water usage has spiked in recent weeks but people need to remember to save water wherever possible. Togther, Capetonians can help keep the dam levels strong.
There are a few predictions of light rain over the next week so we can hope that soon, the dams will reach their 85% collectively.
