SANCCOB has asked residents of Cape Town to please donate old newspapers as they need them to line the cages of their sick sea birds.

Table View, South Africa (27 May 2021) – There are currently over 70 penguin chicks at the SANCCOB (Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds) Table View centre. This, along with all the other rescued sea birds means that the team need newspapers and lots of them!

The team have asked for donations of old but usable newspapers as they are used to line the boxes and crates. The boxes are used to move rescued sea birds, whether they are being taken to the centre or released back into the wild.

SANCCOB explains that the newspapers help with keeping the birds warm while they travel. Should anyone have newspapers to donate, they can drop them off at the Table View Centre.

“We are urgently needing newspapers at our Table View centre! We use the newspaper to line our boxes and crates that we move the birds in. It helps insulate the boxes in order to keep the birds warm and it creates a softer perch for them as well. If you have any old newspapers at home or at work, please consider dropping it off at our centre at 22 Pentz Drive!”

And in case you missed it, Netflix is releasing an eight-part series about South Africa’s penguins. It is called ‘Penguin Town”. Take a look at the trailer below; you will even spot a SANCCOB cameo! The series looks like it is going to be a fun one! You can watch it on Netflix from the 16th of June, 2021.

“You’ve never met penguins like these before. Forget ice and snow, this rowdy colony of African penguins are hitting the sun-drenched beaches and breaking all the rules. Filled with boisterous shenanigans and loads of adorable penguins, this eight-part series from Red Rock Films about the real lives of African penguins brings flipper-flapping fun and drama. Join the ride … this town is gonna get painted black and white!” – Netflix
