Save a Fishie Makes Massive 511kg Litter Haul on Coastal Cleanup Day

International Coastal Cleanup Day is a worldwide beacon of hope, and right at home, the Save a Fishie team and its dedicated volunteers answered the call to fight plastic pollution in our oceans with a massive cleanup at Lagoon Beach.

Cape Town, South Africa (28 September 2025) – Plastic pollution is a massive problem for our ocean, but even small actions can make a big difference. International Coastal Cleanup Day, observed on 20 September, calls for everyday people like you and me to play our part in removing trash from our local beaches and waterways.

Thanks to millions of volunteers worldwide, this day has become a symbol of hope, inspiring action in support of our oceans. Making up part of these millions was the Save a Fishie team, its dedicated volunteers and sponsors, who together tackled a massive cleanup at Lagoon Beach on Saturday.

“We found everything – from microplastics and lollipop sticks, to nappies, clothing, alcohol bottles, broken glass, plastic bottles, chip packets, syringes and bottle tops. Nothing escaped our keen eyes,” shared Save a Fishie Founder Zoë Prinsloo.

The turnout saw a diverse crowd of toddlers, learners from various schools, parents, grandparents, regulars and new faces roll up their sleeves and fill their yellow trash bags.

The outcome?

“Together with our amazing sponsors, volunteers and friends, we collected a staggering 511 kilograms of litter,” shared an elated Zoë.

“International Coastal Clean-up Day may only come once a year, but our actions ripple far into the future — for our children and their children. We hope cleanups like this will inspire even more people to join our regular efforts and make a lasting difference.”

She further thanked the incredible sponsors who continue to keep the dream of litter-free coastlines alive and generously supplied goodies and prizes to spoil the hardworking volunteers.
